Getting Started With Weight Loss

The weight loss industry is so full of misleading claims and advices that often it becomes difficult for an average individual to separate the truths from the lies and the charlatans from the real experts. With so much information available out there, many people become confused and don’t know where to start.

For example, theoretically weight loss can be achieved by following a healthy diet and exercising regularly. But that is only theory, mind you, and the World Wide Web contains more theories than practical advices. As a matter of fact, not all diet plans work for everyone, neither are all types of workouts suitable for everybody.

Further, weight gain is not always the result of leading a poor lifestyle; some people gain weight as a direct side effect of certain medical conditions, and yet some others are obese because of hereditary reasons. It is not practical to say that all these people can lose weight just with the help of diet and exercise; these people may need medical help. That is where a doctor comes in.

Many people try to take the ’shortcut’ and prefer reading the information available on the web and then making their own assumptions based on that, rather than taking time to visit a doctor. Remember that when it comes to your health, there could be no better expert than your own family doctor, and when you are looking forward to shedding some pounds, you are actually looking forward to living a healthier and longer life.

Like I said earlier, not all weight loss programs would suit everyone, and heck, some people don’t even need to lose weight! Before you think of weight loss, ask your doctor if you even need it. Based on your age, ideal body weight and height, your doctor would suggest you a suitable weight loss program.

I am sure your doctor would recommend a healthy meal plan and regular workout routine, rather than the so-called ‘fad diets’. As a matter of fact, fad diets are just that – “fads”. How long do you think you could survive if you are made to drink only cabbage soup or grapefruit juice?

Fad diets are essentially designed to help you lose weight quickly but only for a short while; as soon as you resume your normal eating habits, the ‘lost’ weight would not only return back but you might gain some extra pounds as well, because the weight you actually ‘lost’ with the help of these fad diets was actually water weight and NOT fat weight!

Embarking on a weight loss journey is just the starting step; sticking to your diet and workout routine for the entire life is what you should aim at. If you quit your diet after a short while, you cannot expect either to lose weight or maintain your well-toned body.

Along with that, you also need to change your mindset regarding weight loss. Instead of thinking about ‘quick weight loss’, think ’slow weight loss’, because slow weight loss is essentially permanent weight loss. Quick weight loss is usually not only temporary but also harmful for your health.
